Benefits

Water ingress alarm for cargo holds insensitive to product type or build – up.

Constant self-checking of detection sensors and ‘live zero’ alarm
signal confirms system operational health.

Simple menu driven/push button operation with full functional checks
available at any time from the bridge (holds empty or filled.)

Approved Water Ingress Alarm System for bulk carrier safey
water detection hydrostatic sensorBulksafe’ water Ingress detection monitoring & alarm System draws upon almost 30 years of PSM’s experience in supplying monitoring and alarm systems in shipboard liquid levels to provide a robust, reliable, simple to install and operate solution for this critical water ingress detection in cargo application for bulk carrier safety.Water ingress detection RF sensor

To cover all applications a choice of sensors is offered (hydrostatic & RF admittance), both are solid state devices with no float or other mechanisms to fail, or in-built filters requiring regular cleaning, both provide a 4-20mA  2 wire output which gives 4mA when the cargo hold is empty. This ‘live zero’ signal provides an immediate indication of sensor health, a feature not available to simple switch devices. Any water ingress which is detected while the tanker is underway will immediately cause this output signal to rise triggering an alarm condition.

Systems based on the hydrostatic sensor require only one sensor per hold to detect both pre and main alarm conditions, sensor and system operation may be checked at any time irrespective of hold status by using a simple test mechanism built into the deck termination enclosure. No additional compressed air or water services are needed to effect this test.

For additional refinement the RF Admittance based sensors incorporate full digital communications using the global standard modbus protocol. A 2 wire multidrop network links all alarm sensors to the central monitor, and embedded diagnostics in the sensor continually monitor its operational health. Any errors are immediately reported. The modbus link also enables full remote testing and water detection alarm condition simulation from the Bridge. On receipt of an instruction from the central monitor a sensor can set its 4-20mA output to any value, irrespective of the status of the cargo hold.

Where the RF sensors are employed two are fitted per hold giving enhanced redundancy.

Other dry spaces requiring only a single alarm point are fitted with one sensor.

Installation / retrofit is simple, the sensor is supplied with the required length of cable and simply mounts within a shipyard suplied pipe, clamped to the inside of the tank. Where holds have a lower stool and or a keel duct alternative installations are possible PSM provide a full range of support fittings and tank penetrations to suit any requirement, and will be happy to supply suggested installation drawings.alarm system LCD display

Operation

Simplicity of operation is a key feature. The user is guided by a full menu structure and all messages and prompts are provided in plain English on a backlit LCD display. Dedicated function buttons provide immediate ‘shortcuts’ to auto-calibrate and system tests, and dedicated visual annunciations provide immediate identification of ‘all clear’, “Alarm, active”, “system fault” and “power-fail” conditions.

Alarms

Water ingress detection in cargo alarm conditions also trigger an internal relay which may be used to drive external remote mounted audible and visual annunciations. If required repeater displays are available for remote locations These communicate with the primary display via a 2 wire RS485 serial link and provides an overview of the entire system status. This remote display can also be used to acknowledge alarm conditions. Multiple remote displays can be connected if required.Back to top

Complianceback to top

In accordance with the Regulations individual sensors may be disabled if a tank is to be used for Ballast on a particular voyage.  Upon emptying of the tank the alarm monitoring is automatically re-enabled.

In the event of a primary power source fail, the central monitor will automatically switch to the ships emergency back-up supply and dedicated buttons and menu routines provide a complete operational health check without the need to enter the hold.

Support

PSM will be pleased to discuss your particular application requirements and provide a detailed proposal.

The system is designed for simple installation & commissioning by Shipyard personnel, but if required PSM can offer full Installation & Commissioning services.
